Have I told you a sorrow tale of a life not well spent, or witches who lurk at night for your soul; or the ghost who couldn't make heaven and stayed back on earth to cause havoc?
Have you heard of the river that can't be fetched at noon because the goddess and her children take a swim every noon; or the forest that its woods weep blood when cut?
Do you know Omenuko or ever heard of him - the warrior who fought in the land of the dead, having defeated all but died of disobedience?
Have you heard yet, the tragedy that befell two children who were playing under the udala tree - a whirlwind came and blew them away to the spirit land; or the children who went to pick udala fruits at midnight and died upon seeing a ghost?
Have I ever mentioned to you a woman who gave birth to a yam seedling, and how she was thrown into the evil forest for it was said that the gods had cursed her?
Did I ever tell you that when I was born, I was taken to an Oracle to know who I reincarnated from, for many believed I had the face of Umeagbala, my great grand mother and I had spoken immediately at birth?
Did I tell you that I do not know how truthful these tales are? I hope I warned you not to disagree with any of them, for the gods may strike and you might not find where to hide?
