Who Will Quench Our Hunger?

Guest Post From 'Kemy Austine'

Whenever life’s difficulties causes the poem “On the Beach at Night” by Walt Whitman to reverberate in my mind, it sends multiple emotions down my spine and the efficacy has most often been a still flow of tears running down my cheeks.

Permit me to quote few phrases thus: …Weep not, child, Weep not darling, With these kisses let me remove your tears, The ravening clouds shall not be long victorious, They shall not long possess the sky, they devour the stars only in apparition, Jupiter shall emerge, be patient, watch again another night, the Pleiades shall emerge….

This particular poem has sent me thinking a million times about the many sufferings a great majority experience in this world; just between the century I was born and today we have heard of – the 1st and 2nd world wars, the holocaust, Vietnam war, Chinese civil war, Russian Civil war, bombing of world trade centre, recently the bombing at Paris and many other wars in the Western world that have sent many to early grave, exterminated “yet to invent, inventors” and leaders that would have made the world a better place.

In Africa, we have experienced series of bloodsheds – wars, genocides and the likes. Some of these brutish behaviours were effectuated in contests like – Shaka’s Conquest, Second Congo War/Great war of Africa (the Pygmy Genocide), The Biafra War, the Rwanda genocide and recently, the Xenophobia in South Africa.

It is in the context of these difficulties that Africans have displayed their longing for that day when they shall live without fear of the unknown, when they shall live without fear of another war, fear of another bomb blast, fear of disease and fear of hunger.

African children are hungry for a number of things and for a number of reasons. We are hungry for justice; we are hungry for peace, equity, discipline, love and unity.

We are hungry for that day when our leaders will be servants and not tyrants, when offices are occupied for the common good and not some selfish interest.

We are hungry for that day when our students would be able to stand in a debate with that Harvard or Cambridge student in a fair field of knowledge, hungry to end strikes at work places and at schools.

We are hungry for that day, when our little savings would be used in things useful to us than 'sorting'. Hungry for that day, when our teenage bodies would be regarded as the temple of God, and not desecrated due to rape (or in schools by lecturers).

We are hungry, we are hungry… amidst this hunger, who shall we turn to, who shall quench our hunger?!

I think that in the context of such miseries mentioned above, that the father, as portrayed in the poem patted his child on the back to console him about happenings around him saying: Weep not Child, Weep not darling….

How many children did cry their hearts out during the Biafra War, how many did starve to death, how many were displaced and how many were killed during the Rwanda genocide? How many are still crying due to Boko Haram?

Today, as at then, and especially during this yuletide season, when the prices of things are hiked, children long for their Christmas clothes but have none, they weep! Weeping of disappointment!

We were hungry for change, yes we had gotten one; from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC), from Jonathan to Buhari, from Militancy to Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), from corruption to appointment of corrupt ministers, etc.

We were hungry and angry with the last administration; we ousted them out of power due to hunger for a good Nigeria.

Few months into the new administration, bitterness still fills the air, corruption still festers, life is  still hard, Buhari is still watching, the polemics of APC still virile, Boko Haram still killing, children still starving, women still being kidnapped, oil price still declining, Dollar still raising and perhaps the good is that Christmas is still celebrated!

The hunger still continues, the APC led government cannot quench this; hunger for change, justice, discipline etc. who then will quench our hunger, you or I?

I think a bended knee will, God will! Pray for our Nation, Pray for your Family, Pray for yourself. You don’t know how to do that? Just pray (the Spirit comes to help us in our weakness, for when we do not know how to pray properly, then the Spirit personally makes our petitions for us in groans that cannot be put into words, Rom. 2:26).

Pray that God may quench our Hunger! Merry Christmas!

Still On Christmas

I had a dream last night. I was kidnapped by a fat man in a red suit, and put in a bag. You gonna fess up or what? Did you put me on your Christmas list?

When you have Christmas in your heart, it doesn't matter what is under the tree. All I want for Christmas, cannot be found at a store.

Selfishness makes Christmas a burden, love makes it a delight. Some of us would rather throw away leftovers than give them to the poor. Do your neighbours have food to eat? If you have extra, share.

If you're having an office Christmas party, respect yourself. You don't want to be looking for a job the next day. If you throw up on your boss, you definitely might.

Be safe. Don't drink and drive. Don't celebrate Christmas for the wrong reasons. Let the whole world be engaged in a conspiracy of love.

Christmas is the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall and the genial flame of charity in the heart. Never worry about the size of your Christmas tree. In the eyes of children, they are all 30 feet tall.

Don’t wait for the new year before you change your perspective. Get up and be proactive today! We will open a book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them by ourselves.

The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day. You are a dreamer, and you are an achiever. May you dream and achieve bigger feats, with every passing year.

I wish you all the best for the new year. Keep the smiles, leave the tears, think of joy, and forget the fear. Fall this year into the quiet limbo of the past. Let it go, for it was faulty, and thank God that it can go.

Every time we love, every time we give, it's Christmas. Congratulations to the human race for surviving another trip around the sun. Way to go, everyone!

May the new year find your home full of joy, your heart full of love, and your life full of laughter.

And oh, below is my Christmas gift for you. (See it after the links). I'm so sorry it came late. I hope you forgive me :) xoxo

If I Were Santa

If I were Santa, these are what I'd do:
I'd dump silly gifts that were given to you,
Deliver some things outside your door,
Things you have lost, but treasured before.

I'd give you back all your maidenly vigor,
And to go along with it, a neat tiny figure,
Restore the color that graced your hair,
Before rinses and bleaches resided there.

I'd bring back the shape you were gifted,
Things now suspended would be uplifted,
I'd draw in your tummy and your back,
You'd be like a dream in that fitting slack.

I'd remove your wrinkles, leave only a chin,
You would not rub grease on your skin,
You'd never have flashes or dizzy spells,
You wouldn't hear strange noises like bells.

There would be no aching feet and no corns on your toes,
No searching for spectacles when they're right on your nose.

Not a shot would you take in your arm, hip or fanny,
From a doctor who thinks you're a nervous old granny.

You'd never have a headache, so no pills would you take.
No heating pad needed since your muscles won't ache.

If I were Santa, you'd never look stupid,
You'd be cute with the romance of a cupid,
I'd lift your heart when it begins to whistle,
Your heart would be just light as a thistle.

Alas, I'm not Santa. I'm simply just me,
The randomest of randoms you'd ever see.
I wish I could tell you the demons I've got,
But I'm due at my doctor's for a shot.

Even though I've got flaws, this wish is sincere,
Merry Christmas to you and a Happy New Year.

She Didn't Cut Off Ben

She was in her late 20’s, smart and objectively sexy. She met Ben for a semi-spontaneous date. The chemistry was electric. The food was delicious. The banter was intoxicating. The first kiss was breathtaking.

One thing led to another, and the next thing she knew, she was going at it with this virtual stranger in the back of his car! While it felt right at that moment, she was in a mess afterwards.

It wasn’t that she didn’t have a good time, she did. It wasn’t that Ben wasn’t a good guy, he was. It was that she hopped into bed with him, before they had established any sort of relationship.

So, although Ben politely texted her when she got home that first night, she was on edge for days afterwards, waiting impatiently for a call from him.

Friday went by. Saturday went by. Sunday went by. With each passing day, she felt a rising anxiety. What had she done? Why did she feel this way? How could she stop obsessing?

Mercifully, Ben sent a text on Monday. Predictably, he acted like nothing whatsoever was wrong. In his mind, nothing whatsoever was
wrong. He was just following up on the woman he had slept with, to see if she would like to meet him again.

He asked her out the following Saturday. She said yes, right away. Like magic, her mood lifted instantly. All because Ben, the cause of her turmoil, had texted to save the day!

Saturday rolled around and it was another stupendous evening. Food, laughter, and another dose of that amazing sex she had just experienced the week before. Except this time, she felt even worse afterwards.

It was not that she hated herself for doing it. It was not that she blamed Ben for participating in the act. It was that she simply could not handle the aftermath of no-strings-attached sex.

A few more days went by before Ben’s obligatory "When can I see you?” text. She was barely hanging on, so tortured was she by her intense chemical attraction towards
Ben.

When she told me about it, she insisted that this wasn’t just sexual. She really liked Ben and was open to a relationship with him.

And then, almost accidentally, she let
something slip: Ben had mentioned casually that he never wanted to get married.

She didn’t think this was a big deal. She immediately tried to gloss over that one line, and wondered why I was making such a fuss.

“You want to get married one day, right?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“So why are you sleeping with a guy when you already know that the relationship is ultimately doomed?”

After a few seconds of silence and looking at me in shock, she admitted she had no good answer.

While she was still resistant, she agreed that cutting him loose was probably for the best.

Well, guess what?

She didn’t cut off Ben. She only cancelled her third date with him by text. She didn’t have a conversation with him on the phone. She didn’t tell him not to call and wish him the best.

Basically, she made it sound like something came up and she would later reschedule.

When I asked her why, she said, meekly, “The sex was really good...” before trailing off.

The Reason For The Season

Guest Post From 'Kemy Austine'

It’s Christmas! A time to love and be loved, to share, to reconcile, a time for boxing! Gifts fill the air than any other time of the year. Many empty all their savings for the entire year, just for the sake of the season, some visit their homelands to celebrate with kith and kin, everywhere you go, the sky looks colourful and joyful celebrations throughout the season.

Hotels are patronized this season than ever, restaurants wished they had enough land space to accommodate more persons, the bars never have break, the 'Abokis' would want every day to be Christmas.

The children enjoy the season more (schools have ended); even the aged wished the period be extended for them to have enough time with their grandchildren. Christmas bonuses at places of work, and bonanzas at business enterprises; all these make the period interesting!

Many have never thought of the reason for the season, here and there we find this write-up “He is the Reason for the Season.” Yeah! It’s just like any other write-up we see around, especially on social media and at a season where wonderful and well-articulated wishes are random.

Many see it as a ritual that must be performed, others just celebrate it because it’s the year’s end, and perhaps they anticipate new and even bigger opportunities in the coming year. All these are okay – the celebration(s) and your reason(s)!

Two thousand years ago, the Saviour of Mankind was born, although He was God, He took the nature of man; the manger was his maternity ward, the trough was his cradle, a carpenter he chose for a father, a maidservant for a mother.

The city was humming just like this season is humming. People went about doing their duties, the innkeeper I am sure never noticed the happening, market women calling on their customers, some at the bar drinking to stupor, others at the restaurant eating to constipation.

Businessmen running their businesses while the Little Lord was in “cradle” crying for you and I. The cry began in the inns and consummated at the cross! That singular aspect of His ministry (the Incarnation) is for me as important as the Paschal Mysteries (Suffering, Death and Resurrection).

Without the Birth of Christ, His Death would have not been possible! While we celebrate this season wholeheartedly, we should also prepare ourselves to mourn with our Lord at the proper time, as a balanced spirituality is necessary. The bridegroom is with us. Emmanuel is here!

But while you eat, drink and jolly, I encourage you not to be carried away by the noisemaking around the world. Take time to reflect about this mystery; appreciate this mystery by sharing with the orphan, widow, widower, the homeless, the weak, the sick and the dying.

The world made a mistake of not recognising Jesus when he was born but not for the three wise men. Should we make the mistake again by not recognising Him as our brother?

In whatsoever you do this season always remember this quote: “…and whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy – Max Ehrmann (Desiderata).

Remember, He is the Reason for the Season… Merry Christmas!!!

How To Adjust With Your Roommate To Have A Great Time

Guest Post From Shanaya Mehta

If you are a young working executive or a student staying in a house for rent in Chennai or elsewhere, it is evident of the fact that you might have to share the flat or the apartment with a roommate. The very obvious reason is because the pricing is high, and you cannot afford the rent alone; thus, sharing the expense will be a great help to you.

Your Roommate Is A Different Person
When you are living with a roommate, you have to understand that he or she is a different individual with variant habits and ways of life. There is bound to be disagreements and arguments, even on minute things and thus, there can be conflicts as well. In such cases, one of you needs to adjust and handle the situation wisely, without making it ugly and inconvenient.

Take The First Step
Don’t you think it is better if you take the first initiative in compromising or adjusting with your roommate and enjoy a good time? There is no harm in taking the first step towards maintaining peace and a comfortable relationship between you two, without incurring any fights and quarrels. There must be respect from both ends if you and your roommate want to live with peace of mind.

Don’t Judge Your Roommate
It is always suggested that you should not judge your roommate over his/her attitude on certain things. You never know what is going on in your roommate’s life. You must be flexible and understand his/her situation, show consideration and accommodate accordingly. If your flat mate is stressed out and in anxiety, give him/her some time to relax and if required, you can have a conversation as well and try to help solve the issue.

Communication Is Essential
Like any other relationship, when you are sharing your apartment with another individual, it is important to have communication between both of you. You both can become friends and share about the experiences of your lives. In case there is any problem between both of you, it is better to talk and solve it sooner, rather than delaying it and stretching the issue further for no reason. If there is no proper communication between both of you, it is difficult to have a good relationship.

Pay On Time And Carry Out Your Part Of Household Chores
You must remember that you owe half of the rent’s amount to your roommate. You must make sure that you pay your portion on time so that there is no delay. In case your roommate doesn’t pay on time, ask him/her politely to pay. Furthermore, you must make sure to carry out all your household chores and other responsibilities without relying on your roommate.

Conclusion
While you are staying in a rental apartment or flat and sharing it with a roommate, you must make sure that you make every possible means to adjust to the flat mate and be helpful and kind enough as well.

Launching And Gostrels Celebration @ 3

Gospel Minstrels, a music ministry in Ascension Baptist Church, Bomso-Kumasi, invites you to attend and support the official launch of her maiden single track, outreach ministries, and her third super-duper annual celebration dubbed GOSTRELS CELEBRATION 3 (GC3), with the theme 'LET'S WORSHIP' (Psalms 95:6).

Since its inception, Gostrels Celebration has gathered Christians near and far every first Sunday of the year to offer to God their first fruits of praise and worship.

This year at GC3, as they launch their maiden single track, titled 'WE LIFT OUR HANDS', they seek your financial aid, prayers and presence to push Gospel Minstrels, to establish and run schools and radio outreach ministries.

It's the vision of the ministry to preach Jesus Christ to teenagers via diverse genres of gospel music; the sort teenagers easily open up to, hence, the schools ministry.

Also, it's the vision of the ministry to tell the whole world about 'The Love Of God'; to sing, preach, pray and testify about the love of God to the world, hence, the radio ministry.

Your time, money, and prayers could go a long way to tell the world about the love of God and to introduce Jesus Christ to a teenager you might never meet on earth.

May God bless you abundantly for giving in His name to support this good cause. Thanks in anticipation.

The program starts at 4:00PM on Sunday, January 3, 2016, at Ascension Baptist Church, Bomso-Kumasi.
